GUS Welcomes New Head of School
As of July 1st, Glen Urquhart School welcomed David Provost as Glen Urquhart’s next head of school. Dave is the sixth head of Glen Urquhart School, which will celebrate its 35th year this year. Dave received his B.A. from Union College and his M.Ed. from Lesley University. He has joined Glen Urquhart after serving as head of school at the Nantucket New School for the last eight years. His experience in independent schools goes beyond that, however, having previously served as a classroom teacher and in various administrative roles. Dave is also a professional musician with two CD’s and is a performer who loves to share his music with the school community and beyond.
Dave began his career in education in 1988 as an English teacher at St. Andrew’s School in Barrington, Rhode Island. From 1993-1998, he served as assistant head of the Pennfield School in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Dave then moved west to Santa Barbara, California and served for five years as the middle school head at Crane Country Day School. Dave returned to the east coast and assumed his first head of school role in 2003 as the interim head at Quest Montessori School in Exeter, Rhode Island. From there he moved to Nantucket, where he has served for eight years as the head of the Nantucket New School.
During Dave’s twenty-four years in independent schools he has endeavored to vigorously pursue his own education and professional development, earning a Master’s degree in education from Lesley University and also taking advantage of the rare opportunity to study English literature at Oxford University in 1995. Dave also completed a fellowship at the Klingenstein Center at Columbia University in 2006. Certain topics have been of special interest to Dave, including the mindfulness practice in education, young adolescent development, performance assessment in middle school, and sustainability issues in small independent schools. As co-founder of the National Small Schools Conference, he has maintained strong partnerships with colleagues in schools around the country and abroad.
Glen Urquhart is very pleased to welcome Dave and his family to the north shore and to Glen Urquhart.
