Message from Board of Trustees President
When we were looking at schools as my oldest son approached kindergarten, we were fortunate that he was offered admission to every school to which we applied. What that really translated to for us was that the month between when we received the decision letters and when we had to make a commitment, became a time of intense research. We talked to many people, revisited schools, reflected on our own education, and even called secondary schools to see what we could learn about the characteristics of the graduates from the various institutions. One response that sticks with me still today is a comment by an admissions director that said something to the effect that “All the schools provide a good academic education. Although I do not know how they teach at Glen Urquhart, I can tell you that you will not find more creative thinkers than their graduates.” The ability to think creatively. That sounded like an ideal preparation for the 21 st century. What creates their ability to be creative thinkers is still something to this day that I can’t name. Is it the thematic education? Is it the respect that is taught and received? Is it the children’s engagement in active learning and the faculty’s willingness to answer questions? Is it the confidence that you see in an eighth grader’s eyes as they engage an adult in conversation? Is it technology in the classroom? Is it the many ways children are involved in community service? Is it the math program where children are expected to not only get the “right” answer but must also be able to explain their thought process? My thought is that it is all of this and so much more. It is Knowledge. It is Character. And it is Creativity. It’s the “GUS way.”
