GAIN@GUS Summer Enrichment Program
OUR MISSION
The mission of the Glen Urquhart School GAIN@GUS program is to provide free academic and recreational summer enrichment to underserved, talented students in the city of Beverly and surrounding areas. Our program extends academic skills in math and language arts, offers outdoor experiences, and provides field trips in the greater Boston area. Currently, GAIN@GUS meets for four weeks.
We launched GAIN@GUS in the summer of 2010 with an enrollment of 12 students and we have expanded to 16 since then. During the four weeks spent with GUS faculty, students participate in activities in the computer lab, art room, science lab, on the nature trail, and in the greenhouse. In the afternoons, students learn about nutrition, tend a camp garden, participate in enriching field trips, and relax together at local beaches.
Our eighth grade students serve as interns for GAIN@GUS, assisting in the classrooms, joining in on field trips and afternoon activities, and just basically having fun. This mentoring program is a powerful learning tool that forges rewarding connections between GUS and GAIN@GUS students.
We are pleased that GAIN@GUS has become a dynamic and supportive community where teachers, interns, and students come together to learn, explore, and dream about the future.

SUPPORT
GAIN@GUS is sustained through the generous support of our donors. Gifts provide salaries for our teachers and student interns, nutritious daily meals, classroom materials and supplies, and the cost of weekly field trips. In
addition, donations build our GAIN@GUS scholarship fund.
We continue to look for ways to improve and expand our program. This summer, we will extend GAIN@GUS from four weeks to five, which will provide more time for academic growth and recreation. In the future, we hope to offer Glen Urquhart scholarships for two GAIN@GUS students every year. Through the
generous contributions of our donors, we welcomed the first GAIN@GUS student to Glen Urquhart in the fall of 2011.
WHAT IS 5.5.3?
We are very excited about our 5•5•3 scholarship, which provides financial support for one or two eligible GAIN@GUS students to attend Glen Urquhart for grades six through eight. Implicit in the founding goals of the GAIN@GUS summer program is a fund to enroll at least one student in the Glen Urquhart Upper School program annually.
We call the scholarship 5•5•3 because we endeavor to solicit the interest of five donors who donate $5000 for three consecutive years. We also welcome the commitment of a lesser amount sustained over three years, or a commitment for just one school year. Our goal each year is to guarantee a Glen Urquhart education to at least one qualified and deserving student. We believe Glen Urquhart’s small classes and rich academic and social environment during the critical adolescent years will reward participating students with a foundation for success in high school and beyond.
