At Glen Urquhart, parents are our partners in the education of students. Every day, parents are involved in a number of ways. For example, parents are
* Volunteers in the classroom and library,
* Chaperones on class trips,
* Members of the Parents’ Association, working on committees for events,
* Experts on various topics giving presentations to classes or the whole school,
* Production aides, working on costumes, helping run lights and sound for school performances.
As a GUS parent, you are automatically a member of the Parents’ Association. Meetings are the second Wednesday of every month at 8:30 a.m. Periodically, the PA sponsors speakers and workshops on topics of interest for the parent community, such as a guest speaker on Internet safety.
A very active Parents’ Association raises funds to support the financial aid budget and teacher directed projects, organizes volunteers to support the faculty and classroom projects, and organizes social events to help foster a sense of community among school families. Each homeroom has two room parents who also serve as representatives to the PA Executive Committee. Teachers work with room parents to organize support for field trips, class parties, and other activities.
Each year the Parents’ Association sponsors a major fund raiser such as a goods and services auction or an art auction. Every third year GUS families look forward to “Starry Night,” an auction of art created by members of the Glen Urquhart community. The funds raised by events and activities underwrite a portion of the financial aid budget. Any money raised in excess of the financial aid goal is directed toward teacher initiated projects that are approved by the school administration and supported by the leadership of the Parents’ Association.
During the past few years the P. A. funds have provided new technology in the form of SmartBoards, laptop computers, and digital cameras (both still and video); equipment for the classroom in the newly renovated greenhouse; science lab equipment; and money for professional development.
