Beyond the Classroom

As our school philosophy explains, we believe children learn best when all of their senses are engaged with resources inside and beyond the school’s walls. All learning at GUS is enhanced and enriched by outside experiences both on our campus and in the larger community. On campus, student learning takes place on our nature trail, in our outdoor classroom, and in our greenhouse. Beyond campus, trips designed to expand classroom study include expeditions to tide pools and granite quarries, visits to professional music and theater venues, overnight hiking to New England sites, and the almost-famous fourth grade, three day trip to Mystic Seaport.

“Beyond the Classroom” experiences are not mere field trips. They are integral aspects of a class’s study. Even a first grade visit to the Butterfly Place is tied to the classroom study of life cycles, botany and biology.
