Half-Day Workshops

Half-day workshops are focused, hands-on classes taught by professional artists and teachers. All half-day workshops run from 9:00 to noon. For a full day of camp, campers can enroll in Afternoon Activities or Afternoon Adventures (see description in Extended Day Information).

Ages 6–8

June 24–28
Baking for Fun with Matt Schlegel
Tuition: $225

Prepare a different yummy dessert every day! We’ll bake some favorite treats, like cookies, whoopie pies, brownies, and cupcakes. Aspiring bakers will learn to follow a recipe, crack an egg, and measure ingredients, and they’ll discover how easy it can be to bake fantastic goodies at home!

Fashion Fusion with Amy Billings one more spot left!
Tuition: $225

Transform thrift shop finds into chic runway showstoppers, recycling old materials and castoffs into exciting and unique creations! We will turn sweaters into hand warmers, skirts into bags, gowns into cute summer dresses, and swatches of fabric into belts and other accessories. Budding fashion designers will practice a variety of skills, including operating a sewing machine, hand sewing, safety pinning, and taping.

Iced Delights with Nancy Garvey
Tuition: $185

Concoct a variety of frozen treats, such as ice cream, soda floats, smoothies, and sno-cones. Ice cream entrepreneurs will invent and name their own delicious creations and design a logo and label to go with them. We will also have a visit from Captain Dusty’s Mark Bartlett, who will share secrets of his trade!

July 8–12
Draw, Paint, Create! with Sheila Boss-Concannon FULL!
Tuition: $215

Summer is beautiful! Create art and have fun exploring the themes of summer, including the summer sun, flowers, and our natural surroundings. Campers will experiment with painting, collage, drawing, and printmaking, finding inspiration for their art-making in their own colorful experiences of summer.

July 8–12 and July 15–19

Summertime Ballet Adventures with Samia DeSimone
Tuition: $225

This innovative class combines ballet, storytelling, expressive dance, and movement. Students will explore their own unique potential in a fun and supportive environment, honing their self-confidence and creativity. Each week will feature a different ballet story and theme. No prior ballet experience is needed.

Lego Engineering with Jo-Ann Gorrell

Tuition: $230
Build LEGO machines and contraptions with batteries and gears! Apply engineering concepts to a new project each day—castles and catapults, cars, amusement parks, machines, and crash tracks. This hands-on, minds-on workshop is appropriate for builders of all skill levels.

Crafting for All Seasons with Cheryl Arsenault
Tuition: $215

Make seasonal crafts to give as gifts or decorate your room. Beginning with summer and moving through the seasons, we will make jam from summer berries, fashion corn dolls and other decorations out of autumn corn husks, craft wooden snowflake ornaments for holiday gift-giving, decorate tiny birdhouses to hang in the garden, and much more!

July 22–26
Chemistry Kids with Edith Ventimiglia FULL
Tuition: $225

Roll up your sleeves for some hands-on science experiments! Discover elementary principles of chemistry while watching colors change, liquids erupt, raisins dance, and crystals grow. Experience firsthand the properties of slime and Oobleck. Amaze your family and friends by replicating some of these experiments at home.

Morning Sports and Fitness Camp with Amy Billings
Tuition: $210

Play a different sport every day, including soccer, volleyball, football, and kickball, in a supportive environment. The rules of fair play and good sportsmanship will be emphasized.

July 29–August 2
American Girl Dolls with Nancy Garvey
Tuition: $210

American Girl fans will be on cloud nine! Each day we’ll meet a different special girl, learn about how she lived, make crafts and play games from the period in which she lived, and read some of her stories. Girls are invited to bring a doll to share with their new friends on their first day of camp.

Weather Reporter with Amy Billings
Tuition: $210

Become a weather expert! We will discuss and graph the weather forecast each day, comparing New England weather with the climate in other areas of the world, and learn about different types of weather, from rainstorms to hurricanes. We’ll experiment with tornados and other dangerous weather events we can replicate in class! We will also learn about staying safe in a storm, keep a weather and cloud journal, and practice how to deliver a weather report.

Ages 6–12

July 1–5 (Closed Thursday, July 4)
Basketball Camp with Matt Schlegel
Tuition: $165

Hit the hardwood for a week filled with basketball activities. Drills and lessons on dribbling, shooting, passing, rebounding, and defense will be taught in a fun, supportive atmosphere. Players will take part in skill building, foul shooting contests, 3-point shootouts, and a variety of fun games and workouts. Play will take place in the gym or on the outside court. All levels welcome!

July 8–12
Games for Active Kids with Matt Schlegel
Tuition: $210

If you love to play all kinds of physical games, we choose you! Capture the Flag, Blob Tag, Pirate Ship, 4 Square, Garbage Ball, and Kick the Can are just a few of the games we’ll play. And along the way we’ll practice solving conflicts, working as a team, and playing fair. We will use the outdoor courts and fields and indoor facilities as needed.

July 8–19 (two weeks)
Musical Theater with Peter Stewart FULL
Tuition: $415

Are you ready to act and sing on stage? Peter Stewart, local drama and music teacher, will teach eager young performers to tell the whole story using their voices, faces, and movement. The group will work together to prepare a performance for the last day of the workshop. Special: Add Afternoon Adventures to this workshop for only $80 per week!

July 8–12 and July 22–26

Chess with Mikhail Perelshteyn
Tuition: $185

Let’s play chess! Enjoy the thinking, strategy, competition, and camaraderie of chess. Senior chess master Mikhail Perelshteyn has been teaching students of all ages for over thirty years. Beginners and experienced players are welcome. All materials are included.

Ages 8–12

Fencing with Jack Mullarkey of 3MB Fencing
Tuition: $230

Learn the basic moves of competitive fencing. Fencing develops hand, foot, and eye coordination and is great cross-training for other sports, like hockey, lacrosse, and soccer, and for all-around fitness. Equipment is provided, except each student should bring a glove for his/her fencing hand (any kind is fine). All levels welcome.

Ages 9–12

Outdoor Survival with Joe Karr
Tuition: $210

Survive in the wild using your wits, your senses, and your skills! We will experiment with shelter constructions; sharpen our fire-making skills; learn how to set traps, snares, nets, and baskets; identify plants; track animals; and have a go at orienteering. Dress for the woods and bring a small whittling knife.

Photoshop Fun (instructor TBA)
Tuition: $225

Use all the amazing techniques and tools of this incredible software to make outstanding photos! Bring your own camera or use one of ours. Students will work in our air-conditioned computer lab using MacBooks.

July 1–July 5 (Closed Thursday, July 4)
Beginning Sewing with Amy Billings
Tuition: $180

Learn sewing basics, including sewing by hand, threading and using a sewing machine, and working with a pattern. Items we’ll make might include a dress, pajama pants, a bag, a pillow, a hat, and accessories. Materials will be provided.

Graphic Design with Tamera Burns
Tuition: $180

Use MacBooks and apps like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to design logos, advertisements, posters, wall art, personalized greeting cards, and more! All levels welcome.


July 8–12
Pizza Palace! with Cheryl Arsenault
Tuition: $225

Calling all pizza lovers! Learn to make different types of pizza, including traditional cheese, gluten free, dessert pizzas, and breakfast pizzas! We will make homemade dough and sauce and compare them to store bought varieties, try out new and favorite toppings, and learn some basic kitchen and cooking skills.

Jewelry Design with Amy Billings
Tuition: $240

Work with wire, string, and beautiful beads to design your own necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and other unique pieces. By the end of the week, you will be making your own one-of-a-kind jewelry at home. Students will bring home several handmade pieces. Materials are included.

Lights, Camera, Nature! with Jessica Kagle and Rob Newton
Tuition: $230

Video camera in hand, venture into the wildest places on the GUS campus in search of beauty and drama. Working in small teams, you will plan, film, and edit a short movie about the nature of this unique place. Learn to use cool cameras, scientific techniques, and editing software to create and share a story. Movies will be shown on the final day in the Nance Assembly Space to friends and family.

Kitchen Chemistry with Matt Schlegel
Tuition: $225

Discover the elementary principles of chemistry while making a rainbow-colored liquid density column, creating a volcano, mixing up some homemade slime, and growing crystals. Learn what makes dough rise and how heat transforms dough into bread. Amaze your family and friends by replicating some of these recipes in your own home kitchen!

July 22–August 2 (two weeks)
Clay Magic! with Tamera Burns
Tuition: $415

Translate two-dimensional images into three-dimensional works of clay using hand modeling and a pottery wheel. Make a small sculptural plaque and bring home beautifully glazed and fired objects d’art.

Accessorize! with Cheryl Arsenault
Tuition: $235

Become a fashion designer and create new and fabulously fun accessories to take home! We will practice basic hand sewing and crocheting and use yarn, ribbons, beads, and other materials to make belts, headbands, caps, scarves, earrings, bracelets, and more! Emphasis will be on learning the principles of design. All levels welcome! Materials are included.

That Was a Great Presentation! with Matt Schlegel
Tuition: $225

Strengthen your research, presentation, and computer skills and learn to use PowerPoint to create a terrific slide show. Participants will practice their presentations in an atmosphere of support and encouragement. They’ll learn how to properly download and upload documents and images as well as how to create folders and organize information. All equipment will be provided, but students are welcome to bring their own laptops or iPads.

July 29–August 2
Chocolate Factory with Cheryl Arsenault
Tuition: $235

Who loves chocolate? We do! In this tempting and popular workshop, chocolate devotees will explore various ways to cook with chocolate. We will flavor chocolate, bake with chocolate, make chocolate sauces, and use the cacao bean in a variety of other delicious ways. If you are a chocolate aficionado, you won’t want to miss this one!

Fitness for Life with Matt Schlegel
Tuition: $225

Acquire lifelong health and fitness habits by engaging in workouts that are fun and tailored for kids. We’ll engage in running, stretching, swimming at West Beach (lifeguard on the premises), sports, and strength and conditioning exercises. Participants will receive individual coaching and instruction as well as join in group activities.
