SUMMER PARTNERS ART ACADEMY: Grades 5-9

Glen Urquhart School and Montserrat College of Art have created a partnership,

pARTners, to further the art education opportunities for both institutions. We are excited to offer Summer pARTners Art Academy, a series of art workshops developed for the serious art student who is looking for a sophisticated and focused setting to create art appropriate for his or her portfolio.

Students can enroll in any combination of workshops and in one or multiple sessions of the same workshops.

Classes meet from 8:30–10:30, 11:00–1:00, and 1:30–3:30, Monday–Friday. A counselor will supervise students who attend more than one class per day during breaks. The maximum class size is 10.

If families need an extended day of camp, students can attend GUS Summer Program Early Morning Care or After Camp Care. Please see the GUS Summer Camp section of this brochure for more information about Extended Day.

Draw/Paint with Bea Modisett
Tuition: $190, plus $75 materials fee (payable one time only); 8:30–10:30
Session 1: July 8–12
Session 2: July 15–19
Session 3: July 22–26
Session 4: July 29–August 2
Take your involvement in art to the next level and boost your chances of being accepted into your dream art college. Bea Modisett will work individually with students to develop their skills at translating the three-dimensional world onto the two-dimensional page. Students will work with a variety of wet and dry materials, including ink, acrylic, charcoal, and collage, and focus on observational drawing—mastering the intricacies of conveying space, form, color, and line, and translating these skills across artistic mediums. Students will leave with a strong grasp of the important relationship between painting and drawing and with enhanced observational skills that will serve them in creating the foundation for a high school–level portfolio. Students have the option of attending one or multiple sessions. Each session will contain 1 or 2 main lessons.

There is always more than one way to tell your creative story. Students will explore a wide variety of art making experiences. From black and white prints to mosaic masterpieces, we will experiment with many different and exciting techniques. Both traditional and nontraditional approaches will be taught with media that might include drawing, painting, clay, mosaic, and collage. This fun, hands-on workshop will encourage students to expand their artistic repertoire.

Session 1: July 8–12

Session 3: July 22–26
Session 4: July 29–August 2
Transform ordinary spaces into artistic places! Students will work, individually and in teams, to design and create a mural for the school. They will learn how to transform their ideas into public art while improving their drawing, painting, and collaborative skills. Creativity, craftsmanship, and personal effort will all be highlighted. A consistent willingness to work collaboratively is especially important. We will bring a summer-themed mural to life from sketch to finish. Students should have an open mind and positive attitude to help tell our large-scale summer story together.

We will take full advantage of the on-site opportunities offered by our 33-acre, verdant campus—the greenhouse, nature trail, wetlands, athletic fields, and gardens. Students will also learn to enhance photo design (line, shape, form, texture, color) in the computer lab using Photoshop.

Sculptural Design with Margaurita Spear

Students will use paper mache, air-dry clay, bar soap, wire, and a variety of other materials in the design and development of three-dimensional works. Art can be utilitarian, whimsical, or decorative. Direct instruction about the safe use of materials and tools will precede technique practice in additive/subtractive hand building, carving, armature building, assemblage, drafting/revision, kinetics and structural balance/support.
Each session will offer one major project as a study; students will also pursue smaller, individual projects of their own choosing.
