Ages 4-5: Pioneers Half Day and Full Day Programs

Pioneers: Ages 4–5

Half or Full-Day Camp

Hours: 9:00 am–noon or 9:00 am–4:00 pm

The Pioneers sessions provide theme-based activities for children who have not yet attended kindergarten. Nadine Cubeta and Pat Daignault, preschool teachers at the Harborlight Nursery School in Beverly, lead our Pioneers staff. Pat and Nadine have been with the GUS summer program for many years.

From 9:00 to noon each day, Pioneers engage in thematic activities in small groups led by Pat and Nadine. They play together using classroom toys, art supplies, and our outdoor kindergarten playground. Pioneers enrolled in full-day camp eat a lunch brought from home with their counselors, have a brief rest, and join everyone else at camp for afternoon activities (see description in Extended Day Information). All Pioneers sessions run for two weeks.

Session 1, June 24–July 5

(Closed Thursday, July 4)
Half day: $321, Full day: $517
A Story, A Story

Favorite book characters come alive as campers ignite their interest in literature by looking closely at stories by Kevin Henkes and Laura Numeroff. We will explore how books come into being, write and illustrate a book of our own, and create foods the various characters might enjoy. Campers will be invited to bring a favorite storybook to share with others.

Session 2, July 8–19

Half day: $357, Full day: $575
Kids Create

Campers explore and experiment with color and texture as they paint, shape, and manipulate a variety of art materials. In our studio, young artists will create blot designs and “stained glass” and create original works inspired by Georgia O’Keefe, Ed Emberly, and Eric Carle.

Session 3, July 22–August 2

Half day: $357, Full day: $575
Creepy Crawlers

Find out what makes an insect an insect! Using their own handmade bug hunters, young entomologists will explore the campus for insects and build their own using a variety of recycled materials.
