VOYAGERS: Children 6-8 YEARS OLD

FULL DAY TWO WEEK SESSIONS

Hours: 9:00 am – 4:00 pm

Our full day, two week sessions provide families with a quality, affordable experience in all day summer camp. Voyagers meet in the mornings for thematic activities led by an experienced teacher. They take scheduled breaks from planned activities to enjoy free time on the school’s playgrounds, play games, draw, or just relax with their friends. At noon, Voyagers eat a lunch brought from home at our outdoor picnic area. After lunch we get ready for Afternoon Activities, described in the Extended Day Information section.

SESSION 1 June 25 – July 6 (Closed Wednesday, July 4) EXTREME WEATHER!
Instructors: Nancy Garvey – Week 1; Amy Billings – Week 2
How do tsunamis, hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzards, floods, and other amazing weather events happen? We will learn how different weather patterns affect us here in Massachusetts, and in other parts of the world. We will conduct a scientific experiment or study related to each one, and make some related crafts that will help us to learn more about these ferocious weather events. Tuition $445

SESSION 2 July 9 – 20 GROW YOUR OWN! COOK YOUR OWN! FULL

We will design, construct, and manage our very own garden, select plants, plant seeds, learn how to compost, dig for worms, pick some ready to eat greens and other vegetables and make some yummy salads and salsas, basil sauce with pasta, pizza with fresh herbs, scrambled eggs with chives, and much more! Tuition: $495

SESSION 3 July 23-August 3 OUTDOOR ADVENTURES WITH JOE KARR
We will explore our surroundings while we learn how to follow a map and search for treasure! Along the way, we will observe local animals, find what’s hiding under logs and in the trees, dip nets into our stream for water animals, build an outdoor fort, and have a campfire. We’ll do some science experiments, build animal habitats, have a scavenger hunt, do some arts and crafts, and have a blast! Tuition: $495

SPECIALTY HALF DAY WORKSHOPS for AGES 6-8

The Specialty Workshops are focused, hands-on classes taught by professional teachers and artists. All half day workshops run from 9:00 – noon. For a full day of camp, campers may enroll in Afternoon Activities/Adventures described in the Extended Day Information section on the previous page.

Campers take a mid-morning break from workshop activities during which they play outside on the school’s play structure or grounds and eat snacks brought from home.

June 25-29 Lego Engineering
Instructor: Jo-Ann Gorrell
Campers will learn engineering concepts while building LEGO machines and contraptions with batteries and gears. We will explore a new theme each day; Castles & Catapults, Cars, Amusement Parks, Machines and Crash Tracks. This hands-on, minds-on camp is appropriate for builders of all skill levels. Jo-Ann Gorrell is an engineer and founder of Engineering Action, offering programs in engineering for children of all ages. This will be her third summer at GUS.

June 25-29 ADVENTURE GAMES
Instructor: Joe Karr
During this week, adventure is king! We will play all sorts of group games that will engage your creativity, excitement, and definitely, fun! Most games will be played outside. A few favorites include Asteroids, Wolf Pack, Blob Tag, and Lava Pit. We may also use the air-controlled gym for indoor fun using hoops, nets, mats, or other equipment. Safety and cooperation will be emphasized.

June 25-29 BEGINNING SEWING  FULL
Instructor: Amy Billings
Learn how to measure and cut fabric and learn the basics of sewing. Each camper will learn hand stitching techniques and practice using a sewing machine with adult supervision. The projects selected will be suitable for girls and boys. Instructions for fabric selection will be sent prior to the start of camp.

July 2-6 (Closed Wednesday, July 4) CRAZY FOR COOKIES
Instructor: Matt Schlegel
Learn how to turn out perfect treats with a cookie-a-day. We’ll bake chocolate chip, M&M, and oatmeal cookies and try out some more extravagant recipes, while we learn some basics about baking in the kitchen. Kids will take home a new batch of samples every day and take home a personalized recipe book at the end of the week.

July 2-6 (Closed Wednesday, July 4) AMERICAN GIRL DOLL FULL
Instructor: Nancy Garvey
American Girl Doll fans will be on cloud nine all week in this popular camp! Each day we’ll meet a different special girl. We’ll learn how she lived, make some crafts based on her life, play games, and read some of her stories. Girls are invited to bring their dolls to share with their new friends.

July 9-13 ICED DELIGHTS
Instructor: Nancy Garvey
Learn how to make popular summer concoctions such as ice cream, soda floats, smoothies, sno-cones and other frozen treats. We will learn the difference between ice cream and gelato and the science and history of making them. Ice Cream Entrepreneurs will name their own creations and create a clever label and logo to go with them. We will also have a visit from Captain Dusty’s Mark Bartlett who will share secrets of his trade!

July 9-20 (two weeks) MUSICAL THEATER WITH PETER STEWART FULL
Are you ready to act and sing on stage? Campers will learn to tell the whole story using their voices, faces, and movement. Join Peter Stewart, GUS drama and music teacher, for two weeks of fun and learning for children ages 6-12. There will be a performance on the last day of the workshop. Peter is a colorful and accomplished singer, stage manager, composer, and musician. His infectious enthusiasm and warmth make all of his performances special events.

July 9-13 and July 16-20 [Students may enroll in one or both weeks.] CHESS FOR BEGINNERS
Instructor: Mikhail Perelshteyn
Let’s play chess! Senior chess master Mikhail Perelshteyn has been teaching students of all ages for over thirty years. Beginners and experienced players ages 6-12 are welcome to join this class and enjoy the thinking, strategy, competition and camaraderie of chess. All materials included.

July 9-13 and July 16-20 [Students may enroll in one or both weeks.] SUMMERTIME BALLET ADVENTURES
Instructor: Samia DeSimone
Students will be guided and encouraged to explore and achieve their own unique potential and personal experience in a positive and fun learning environment. The program combines ballet lessons, storytelling, and expressive dance and movement segments. It meets the needs of the individual student and provides a positive childhood experience that increases self-confidence and creativity. Each week will feature a different ballet story and theme. No prior ballet experience is needed. Ms. DeSimone teaches dance at various schools including GUS and at the Brookline Ballet School. She was a principal faculty member of the Ballet Workshop of New England from 1996-2003, and recently with The Boston Ballet School Marblehead. She is fluent in several languages including French, Arabic, Lebanese, and English. She completed her classical and traditional dance training with a B.A. in Fine Arts from the Institute of Fine Arts of Beirut.

July 16-20 MAKE YOUR OWN

Do you like to make things? Campers will make their own kites and take them flying, build a terrarium from plants found around our campus (no endangered species will be removed from the environment), construct a birdfeeder to hang in your backyard, and more in this fun hands-on workshop!

July 23-27 ENCHANTED FOREST FULL
Instructor: Nancy Garvey
We will read some favorite fairy tales and visit the forest in search of fairies. We will design some fairy homes to offer to the forest fairies, and make a magical punch that fairies (and children) can enjoy. We will write letters to our favorite fairy tale characters, and “publish” our own book of fairy tales to bring home at the end of the week.

July 23-27 BAKING WITH ANGELA
Instructor: Angela Dominick
Get out those bowls and wooden spoons and learn the basics of baking with Angela Dominick, Chef and co-owner of Dom’s Trattoria and host of her own cable TV cooking show on the North Shore. Beginning bakers will learn the critical skills of following a recipe, measuring ingredients, and the differences between stirring, beating, and blending. Each day we will bake something different and delicious to take home. All products and recipes used will be nut free. Limited to 10.

July 23-27 CHEMISTRY KIDS
Instructor: Edith Ventimiglia
Come for a week of fun, hands-on chemistry experiments! Discover elementary principles of chemistry while watching colors change, liquids erupt, raisins dance, and crystals grow. Experience first-hand the properties of slime and Oobleck. At the end of the session you can amaze your family and friends by replicating some of these experiments at home.

July 30-August 3 BLAST OFF!

In this camp, budding astronauts will take an imaginative flight to the galaxies! We will learn about our solar system, make models of planets and the Milky Way, learn how astronauts survive in outer space, and launch a rocket!

July 30-August 3 ALL ABOUT ART
Instructor: Sheila Boss-Concannon
Is Art your favorite class in school? Then this workshop is for you! You will experiment with different art mediums including paint, paper, collage, and clay. Learn some new paintbrush techniques and work with different types of paint. Use a variety of papers, photographs, and other materials to create a unique collage. You will also have fun using colorful modeling clay while learning some sculpting skills.
