Interview with Andrew Smith '90

Date:
Wednesday, December 14, 2016

Andrew Smith ’90 visited GUS Monday to share his experiences with students and to pass on some valuable life lessons. Smith, the founder of ATDynamics, invented TrailerTails ©, a device that improves fuel economy by reducing the aerodynamic drag generated at the rear of semi-trailers. He spoke of his travels and adventures in Patagonia and Santiago, Chile, and of his memorable class trips as a GUS student, including Mystic Seaport and hiking trips to the mountains of New Hampshire. Andrew still has his black books from GUS and refers to them often. He encouraged students to write down their hopes and dreams in their own books. He also spoke of the importance of following one’s passion to do important work and of the responsibility GUS students have to make a difference in the world. He left students with what he feels are three of the most important lessons he’s learned:

  • Pursue meaning in your work.
  • Pursue adventure in your life.
  • Don’t get caught in the whirlwind.
