Expressing Sound In Art

Our kindergarteners continue to explore the theme of motion, moving on from human and animal motion to motion in nature: wind, water, and sound.  Last week they studied sound, learning about sound waves and how sound travels, and even got a chance to “see sound” as they watched their noise-making, singing, and talking represented on the computer.

Next, they discussed how sound could be depicted in a picture, using word bubbles, microphones, musical notes, etc., how artists might depict sound in their art, and even learned about an aspect of synesthesia - when two senses such as hearing and seeing overlap in an individual. In an all-class zoom meeting, students created art using materials from their homes, while listening to music - noticing and exploring how different sounds and songs influence what they create!
