GUS Institute: Monuments + Memorials

  • Glen Urquhart School 74 Hart Street Beverly United States (map)

What is the purpose of monuments, memorials, and other commemorative public art? How does it shape - and bias - our understanding of history? How can we ensure that important history is not forgotten? Students will view and analyze local public monuments and memorials. They will discuss and investigate what these structures say about who and what society values and wishes to remember, who is included and who is left out. They will also design and model their own monument.
