Día Internacional de la Paz Lower School Discussions
This week in la clase de español, lower school students learned about la paz, or peace. We learned how to say the theme of this year’s International Day of Peace: respeto, seguridad, y dignidad para todos (respect, safety, and dignity for all). We talked about how each of these ideas promotes peace, and we defined what peace means for each of us.
I wanted to highlight for families and friends of lower school students our discussion about dignidad, dignity, for all. I defined dignity as treating all people, no matter who they are or what they’ve done, as human beings who matter. Students understood about treating friends and family this way. They understood about treating people who have less, including the homeless, this way. They struggled to understand that we should also treat those who have made bad choices this way. We talked about how enemies, people who are mean, and (with the older grades) criminals are people who might have made bad choices but deserve to be treated like people who matter. Kiddos often see things in black and white, so I tried this week to push them to see the shades of grey in between. We had some great conversations, and all the students added their names to a poster about the International Day of Peace theme for 2017 that now hangs in the lower school lobby. Please check it out if you have a chance, and maybe check in with your student(s) about how they think about dignity for all. Muchas gracias!
