Positive Leaders: Grade 4
In fourth grade, students have been learning about what makes a person a positive leader. They discussed leadership traits and simple ways that students can be positive leaders in school. They read biographies, watched videos and discussed the lives and attributes of leaders such as Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, Gandhi, Roberto Clemente, Wilma Mankiller, and Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, Christine Darden (the mathematicians from Hidden Figures).
Recently they read ‘Martin's Big Words,’ a biography that recalls many of Dr. Martin Luther King's famous quotes, and created a class mural from the illustration on the cover of the book. Each student worked on one square of his face, then they put them all together.
They also listened to his "I Have A Dream" speech and learned about his peaceful protests including the 1963 March on Washington. Over the coming months they will continue our study of positive leaders, people like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
