GAIN@GUS Summer 2020 Update

Dear Friend of GAIN@GUS,

We are disappointed to share that as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, GAIN@GUS will not run this summer. It was a decision we did not take lightly, and that was made in close coordination with school counselors and social workers from our partner schools in local communities. Out of an obligation to give our families ample time for planning, the decision was made and communicated to our GAIN families on May 1, 2020.

At the time, we could not guarantee that we would be able to operate on campus, and though the CDC had shared prospective guidelines, no specific dates were provided. It was also clear that, even if we were able to be on campus, we would not be able to provide essential aspects of the GAIN program - like free breakfast and lunch, transportation to and from GUS, swimming, social interactions, and more. We were also advised by our partners that virtual learning would not be an option. All students who would have graduated from GAIN this summer have been invited to return next summer to finish the program.

This was not an easy decision, but we have put the health, safety, and wellbeing of our students and faculty first. We intend to keep in touch with GAIN families and if an opportunity presents itself to gather as a group, even just for a day late this summer, we will make an effort to do so!

Thank you for your ongoing support of GAIN students, and for your understanding during this ever-evolving and challenging time. We know you will share in our sadness for the students who will not get to enjoy the academic challenge and personal growth experienced as the result of a GAIN summer. We remain committed to, and bolstered by, the principles of the GUS mission that guide us to teach children to respect all people, to value difference, and to act responsibly in our communities, and the world, and look forward to kicking off our program again next summer.

All our best from GAIN@GUS!
