Finding Inspiration Through Reflection
February into March is a very busy time for schools. Here at GUS, it is no different.
The second trimester is wrapping up and we are all eagerly awaiting Open Mic Night, Boar Cup, Spring Break, and secondary school admissions decisions. It’s an excellent time to slow down and reflect. With the year two-thirds behind us, there is a lot to be proud of, but still plenty of time to end the year strong. Not just for our students as they begin a new trimester, but also for us as a school.
The mid-year DEI update demonstrates how we can be proud of growth, while also feeling inspired to look ahead to what is yet to be done. I had that same feeling when I recently presented at the National Association of Independent School Conference in Las Vegas. Together with board member Peter Mason, we shared a vision for successful succession planning with a particular focus on internal candidates. What an opportunity for me to reflect on how far this school has come the 13 years that I’ve been here - particularly these last four years that I’ve served as both interim head and head of school! I’ve been so focused, along with my team, on where we want our school to go next, I had almost forgotten what those early days of being a new head were like just four years ago. As I remembered, shared my experiences, and offered advice to fellow independent school professionals, I was filled with gratitude for the opportunity to guide this school that I love so dearly. Just as with our DEI plan, reflection becomes inspiration and I am so excited to continue our work to grow our small school.
In so many ways and in so many areas, inspiration is truly all around us! It is in the work of our students at the Youth Empowerment & Sustainability Summit, in the words of Mr. Bartsch as he reflects on the world map projects, and in the story of Crystal DaCruz ‘98 and her GUS experience. While I have big dreams for our small school, I find so much of what I hope for happening every day and I know we are on the right path.
I am incredibly proud of all that we’ve accomplished since September, but also in the years since our founding. I know you will enjoy all that is shared in this month’s Tartan and I know even more wonderful news is to come as spring comes to GUS once more.
Trust and Go Forward,
