Hurry Up, Slow Down: April Tartan

Dear GUS Community,

When the weather gets warmer and the days get longer, there is a special energy on campus! Spring is my favorite time of year in schools, though I think I say that about the period between Thanksgiving and winter break, and the week of the Boar Cup too. Something that all these times have in common is that they are all before a break. There is something about seeing the finish line that gives you that second wind to finish strong and we are certainly finishing strong in these last weeks before summer.

I call this the “hurry up, slow down” time of year. While we can’t wait for summer, the year seems to have flown by. Our days now are filled with such fun, as Katie Chhu shares in her reflection on spring at GUS. The 8th grade is on their service trip, 6th grade has already traveled to The Farm School, and trips to Mystic, Chewonki, and the Joe Dodge Lodge are all coming up! Our dear friend and GUS alum parent, David Coffin has been back on campus getting the 4th grade ready for Songs and Tales of the Sea and 7th grade has begun their reading of The Outsiders.  I know all the adults are excited for their fun too, as the Parents Association plans the first-ever Adult Boar Cup, and the community eagerly awaits the Annual Meeting and discussion of our new strategic plan. Yes, campus is certainly alive with fun occasions and important milestones as we head towards graduation.

So while these are busy days, filled with sunshine and laughter, we must also remember to take a moment to slow down and soak it in. We may feel the fast-paced tick of the clock as these days go by, but as you take a minute to perhaps watch the clouds slowly moving by, take a breath and appreciate how far we have come, not only this year but also over the last forty-five plus for GUS. Big changes are coming for our students as they move up and move on and big changes are coming for GUS as well, as we work to make our strategic plan a dream realized. Spring is an exciting time at GUS, but it is truly just the beginning!

Sincerely,
