Distance Learning: Our Real-Life Design Challenge

Four weeks ago, as we firmed up plans for distance learning, our focus was, as it always is at GUS, on the student experience. Our goal during this time away from campus has been to continue to provide meaningful learning experiences for our students in a safe and supportive environment, where students are challenged in a way that is fun and engaging. This style of learning is the hallmark of a GUS education whether we're on-campus, or not.

Though the current situation has forced us to think about achieving our goals in new and innovative ways, like our students, we are meeting that challenge head on, not afraid to try new things, learn from our mistakes, and strive to be our very best. As always, I am in awe of the depths our teachers will go to for our students. While these weeks have been challenging, they have also been rewarding and inspiring. From 1:1 meetings, to small group zooms, to full class gatherings and even whole school morning meetings, we are finding new ways to come together to share, learn, and grow. I truly can’t wait to see what our teachers do next!

I hope you'll take a moment to watch this thoughtful message from my colleague Emily Rabinowitz-Buchanan who is not only our director of preschool, but also responsible for lower school teacher support and curriculum evaluation, as she reflects on our experience three weeks into distance learning. I think she captures so much of what makes GUS great, not just as we face difficulties, but always. Please know we are always here to answer any questions. I love talking about GUS and would welcome the opportunity to share more about what makes our school so special.

Sincerely,
Gretchen Forsyth
